The FSFE team is experienced and strengthen each other in terms of their knowledge, experience, and competencies. A marine biologist has been a member of FSFE since 2017. Since August 2018, the FSFE team has welcomed a horticultural specialist who has gained ample experience with hydroponics rigs for the cultivation of vegetables and herbs. For salmon farming, FSFE uses the technically approved organization LandIng Aquaculture.
Involvement of knowledge institutes
An agreement has been concluded with Wageningen University & Research to validate the POC phase and to support FSFE in setting up the salmon farm. Professor Komen of Wageningen University & Research notes that FSFE is starting at the right time, as it is becoming increasingly clear how salmon can be raised in an RAS system.
ILVO from Ostend will support FSFE with its knowledge of aquaculture. Rijk Zwaan from De Lier will contribute to the Leafy Greens cultivation by sharing its knowledge and expertise. Rijk Zwaan has gained plenty of experience with its hydroponics test rig in Fijnaart. FSFE will use an aquaponic rig itself (also on water but with food for the salmon).
Proven technology
In America (Virginia and Wisconsin), organic farming methods for vegetables, herbs, and freshwater salmon are well advanced. Salmon are already being harvested from fresh water at the University of Virginia and in Wisconsin. A commercial company that is a spin-off from these universities and focuses on the USA market has successfully started a freshwater salmon farm.
RVO
After thorough research, RVO has awarded FSFE a subsidy that FSFE has helped to start with the Proof of Concept of breeding salmon in sweet water. This trial has taken place from May 2021 until October 1st, 2023. FSFE has proven it is possible to grow salmon eggs exclusively in fresh water to salmons of approx. 2.5-3 kg.
